WELCOME to the official site of the Copperton Community Council
The Copperton Community Council would like to welcome you to our Website.
Copperton is nestled at the mouth of Bingham Canyon approximately 25 miles Southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. Our town was started in the 1920’s when the Utah Copper Company decided to build a community for its workers. Copperton is a historical landmark and is listed on the Utah State Historical Registry and the National Historical Registry.
In a sense, we have our own wildlife refuge. It is not uncommon to see a doe or buck in your front yard; or trotting down the street. On many occasions during the fall and early winter a large herd of elk can be seen in the fields just east of town. One might even see an eagle perched atop a telephone pole watching for field Mice or other prey.
The Community Council and residents feel we have the better of two worlds living in Copperton. We are far enough removed from the congestion of city living, yet living close enough to schools, shopping centers, entertainment, restaurants, and other amenities.
Our community is diversified; many have lived in town for 60-plus years, others are relative newcomers. Residents say Copperton’s quaintness, peacefulness and downright friendliness is what makes the community so attractive.
We are fortunate to have a beautiful park in the center of our community that is maintained by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation. Residents for the most part take ownership and pride in their homes and yards. We have great community involvement! Between April and September, the Copperton Community Council sponsors a yard of the Week contest. Each week a resident’s yard is chosen as Yard of the Week and he or she is given a $25 beautification award.
Each year we have a July Fourth breakfast and celebration sponsored by the Bingham Canyon Lion Club and the Bingham Volunteer Firemen. This breakfast gives former and current residents and opportunity to reminisce about the good old days. Copperton Town Days, held on the last Saturday in August, gives residents an opportunity to visit with families and neighbors. Games are provided for the children, a low-cost dinner is served in the afternoon and later in the evening a dance is held for the youth of the community.
The Christmas season is a special time to visit our community as many decorate their homes and yards. The Community Council sponsors a Christmas-lighting contest and award prizes. A new tradition was started in 2006 when the town held its first Christmas in Copperton, an Evening of Caring and Sharing. A town Christmas tree was decorated in the park and leaders of The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church related spiritual messages. In addition, the 2006 committee honored the men and women who have served and are now serving in the armed forces. During 2007 the committee will choose a new theme for next year’s Christmas.
We invite you to take a short ride and see for yourself what makes our community special.
